| Country Profile
Bangladesh suffers more natural
disasters than any other country in the world.
Floods and typhoons often wreck havoc. It is
also the most populous country with 2,600 people
per square km. Bangladesh is one of the world's
poorest nations, too, with only a 24 percent
literacy rate. World Hope International provides
child sponsorship in partnership with HELP Bangladesh.
Bangladesh came into existence in 1971 when
Bengali East Pakistan seceded from its union
with West Pakistan. About a third of this extremely
poor country floods annually during the monsoon
rainy season, hampering economic development.
Update
Floods
have devastated the country, the worst flooding
since 1988. But God has protected the children
at Samaritan Children's Home and the flood waters
did not reach their property. Out of concern
for those in need, and at the suggestion of
Dina, one of the older students, the children
fasted two meals and the teachers at their school
gave one day's wages to provide food for 54
families affected by the flooding.
Ruth, who has lived at the home for 14 years, was married this
summer to a Christian young man, Boaz. David Halder gave her in
marriage and provided the wedding feast for nearly 400 guests including
the children and staff at the home.
