Overview
World Hope International Bosnia and Hercegovina
(WHI-BH) exists to transform communities through
education, health, and enterprise, with the
ultimate goal of empowering the community to
realize that they can affect change in their
own community.
Education
The Education Resource Center (ERC) was started
in order to meet ongoing needs for those providing
education and health to the community of Livno.
These resources include use of teacher’s
books and manuals, computers and internet, classroom
supplies, etc. The Education Resource Center
acts as the hub for all the projects in which
WHI-BH is involved.
English Club
English Club desires to provide an environment
for learning and growth in the English language,
based chiefly on conversation skills. Classes
are offered on the beginner, intermediate and
advanced levels with all teachers being native
English speakers. Each class session is an hour
and a half long and meets twice a week for ten
weeks. English Club takes place two times a
year.
Computer Class
The
Computer Class is designed to give medical,
educational and government professionals an
opportunity to enhance their computer skills.
Thirty-five students are grouped in four classes,
which meet two times a week for an hour and
a half. Computer classes last for five months
and at the end of this time, the students receive
a certificate recognized by the country’s
Ministry of Education.These certificates can
be added to their working resume books.
Adopt-A-Classroom
Project
The Adopt-A-Classroom project was established
to assist with major renovations in local schools,
including the purchase and installation of new
floors, paint, desks, chairs and windows. In
the summer of 2007, WHI-BH renovated six classrooms
with the help of five U.S. teams and the local
community, which reached their goal of securing
100% labor and 10% of finances for one local
classroom.
Adopt-A-Classroom empowers the local community
to take ownership of renovating their schools.
Thanks to local initiative, plans are in motion
to take this model to other schools throughout
the county.
In 2008, WHI-BH plans to renovate eight classrooms
and finance the refinishing of the floors in
sixteen others. Donors and volunteers are needed
to complete the work.
Education Interaction
Team
The Education Interaction Team (EIT) was developed
to encourage teachers and give them opportunities
for professional development. A partnership
between education professionals from the U.S.
and the Livno community, this partnership allows
local teachers and directors to learn new techniques
and methods through seminars and hands on experience.
The partnership also gives education majors
from American universities the opportunity to
come and learn in a cross-cultural setting.
One focus has been equipping teachers to serve
students with special needs. The EIT occurs
twice a year and lasts for one week.
Other
Projects
Medical Interaction Team
The Medical Interaction Team is a partnership
between medical professionals from the U.S.
and Livno. The partnership gives doctors and
nurses in Livno an opportunity to learn new
theories, methods and techniques, so that they
can improve the healthcare in their community.
The partnership takes place one time a year
and lasts for a week.
Summer
Camp
A collaborative effort by WHI-BH and
other community organizations, the Summer Camp
uses service projects to show youth how they
can work together to accomplish a common goal.
The camp strives to promote volunteerism, develop
leadership skills and inspire healthy lifestyle
habits and choices. WHI-BH hopes the youth will
take these skills and ideas into their schools,
professions, personal relationships and communities.
Funding for the camp was provided by the Belgian
Flemish Government and a local Red Cross chapter
in Belgium.
