Hope International – Brazil (WHI-B) opened the
Value for Life Institute in Manaus, Brazil, in early
2007 to bring local children in from the street and
provide a safe atmosphere of love, learning and encouragement.
The Institute is open to children between the ages
of 12 and 17 seeking education and nurturing and expressing
commitment to the Institute’s biblically-based
curriculum.

In
2007, the Institute accomplished many goals:
•Began with 45 adolescents and ended with 30
who finished the year
•Of these, 2 will become monitors/helpers for
next year
•This year there were 16 new adolescents of
which 8 were totally unchurched. Three of the unchurched
youths are now a part of the youth group at the
Wesleyan Church.
•Greatly improved the snack that was offered
•Bought and distributed uniforms for all participants
•Won the support of a social worker who is
now a part of our team
•Received the support of a Representative to
the House, who will help with the recognition as
a NGO
•Able to get most documents necessary for the
legalization of the Institute
•Received the use and support of the Monte
Pascoal Wesleyan Church and the Christ the Redeemer
school
•Received the support of the parents, many
who helped as volunteers Acquired an accountant
There
are new challenges ahead in 2008 for WHI and the Institute.
In the upcoming year, the Institute needs to:
•Hire a new secretary
•Secure the building and replace items stolen
during two break-ins
•Find larger space and a better structure for
activities
•Find ways to limit the number of girls leaving
the program because their parent(s) or caretaker
need them to work in the home
•Master WHI’s accounting software
•Clear final legal hurdles for the Institute’s
legitimacy
•Programmatically, the Institute has several
goals for 2008:

the Christian Education activities by involving
Wesleyan pastors and Bible College professors
•Add
to the number of adolescents that the Institute
helps
•Add tutoring and help for the students’
school work
