Country Profile
Originally
a Dutch colony in the 17th century, by 1815
Guyana had become a British possession. The
abolition of slavery led to black settlement
of urban areas and the importation of indentured
servants from India to work the sugar plantations.
This ethnocultural divide has persisted and
has led to turbulent politics. Guyana achieved
independence from the UK in 1966, but until
the early 1990s it was ruled mostly by socialist-oriented
governments.
The Ruimveldt Children's Home and Care
Center (RCHCC)
Greetings
from the sunny and warm Caribbean! The picture
does not quite show the life that is heard throughout
the home every day here at Ruimveldt Children’s
Home and Care Centre. Trust me, our children
make some noise! We currently have six children
who are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS,
but you would not know it to see them. Though
they came to us as orphans and vulnerable children,
they now have a home and they call it their
own! This is truly a house that love built.
The celebration of work from overseas teams
and local volunteers was celebrated on November
18th, 2006 with a dedication celebration. Now
the building that love and perseverance built
is filled with love for every child that calls
Ruimveldt Children’s Home and
Care Centre their home!
Our main goal is to give our children hope and
a future. Though every child has their own story
of tragedy and pain, that no child should ever
have to face, their core needs of security,
health and wholeness remain the same. Our care
encompasses the whole child. Our trained Christian
staff strives to give excellent care that includes
providing for their medical, nutritional, emotional,
physical, educational and spiritual needs. We
also make it our ambition to not be an institution,
but a home for children. So everyone who works
and volunteers at RCHCC is part of the family
and God’s love flows through all of us.
In the midst of building Lego towers or putting
puzzles together our children would never know
that we have quarterly goals for them. However
personal care plans include goals for social
skills, behavior, education and life skills,
as we aim to give these children the tools they
need to be children of hope and children of
promise.
Beyond
the reach of our own children lies a mass of
people in the community who face much of the
same hopelessness that have brought children
to RCHCC. In an effort to bring them hope we’re
coordinating outreach efforts and educational
workshops Our first outreach came during the
Christmas season as we welcomed 180+ community
children into our play yard for a Christmas
party. Our staff prepared a
meal for them, led the games and songs and shared
the Christmas story. As night fell we distributed
treat bags to everyone with a small gift and
goodies inside. This event welcomed the community
to our place and they have warmly received us.
We now hope to reach into the community with
abstinence education material and parent education
workshops. As resources allow we also hope to
meet some felt needs that target home care for
families who have children infected with HIV.
We are not accomplishing all this on our own.
We have an active board and a dedicated volunteer
base that breathes life into the ongoing vision
of RCHCC. We are also hosting overseas teams
to support our endeavors to get God’s
love spread as far as our hands and hearts can
reach.
We anticipate a full
house of fifteen children and the hiring of
more staff in the near future. We also
look forward to launching some innovative outreach
efforts and educational workshops. We thank
you for breathing life into our efforts through
your prayers and financial gifts. Both are essential
as we continue to love children and help them
live each day with hope.
