Overview
Located in southern Africa, Malawi is a very poor country that depends primarily on agriculture. Malawi has an 11% HIV/AIDS rate and an estimated 700,000 orphans due to HIV/AIDS. World Hope International (WHI) is working to reverse those trends with its HIV/AIDS prevention and care for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).

HIV/AIDS
Young people continue to be at the center of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; they represent half of all new HIV/AIDS infections each year. Research shows that youth are more likely to listen to their peers about sexuality, and that providing youth with skill-based and comprehensive prevention information best prepares them for the times when they are confronted with sexual decisions. WHI has an HIV/AIDS prevention program in Malawi called Reach4Life (R4L). R4L is a faith-based, 40-lesson youth discipleship tool that emphasizes purity and important life skills which help youth make good decisions. R4L staff train youth volunteers who facilitate R4L groups within middle and high schools. R4L was in nine schools with 5,948 students combined from January-June 2008.

OVC
WHI is not only interested in preventing new HIV/AIDS cases, but also about caring for those who have been affected by AIDS, such as orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). These OVC programs work to strengthen families affected by HIV/AIDS through rural development, microfinance, education, and activities to support early childhood development. Overall, 7,500 OVC has been assisted through WHI programs in Malawi..
