With African, French, and Hispanic roots, Haiti has a uniquely blended culture developed over it’s more than 100-year history. Bordering the Dominican Republic, Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean. Extensive coastlines, mountain ranges, and tropical climate make up the landscape of this island country. The dense population of the country has eroded soil making agriculture rare pushing Haitians to the cities for occupations.
The Creole and French-speaking Haitians are proud of their independence and enjoy cultural activities such as art, music, dance, and football (soccer). The capital city, Port-au-Prince, is filled with small workshops, street markets, and food stalls that employ many Haitians. Even with its beauty and unique culture, this coastal country is among the lowest life expectancy due to its dense population, and one-third of the population is under 15 years old.
